The Milton Bradley Grandmaster is one of the oldest chess robots that you can buy on eBay and other auction sites. It was first sold in the early 1980s. It has a robotic mechanism underneath the board to move the pieces on its own. It used a 6502 microprocessor with a 16 KB program. These robots were built like a tank, so you can still find working versions if you search hard enough.
The ChessUp 2 is the smartest chessboard we have tested. It runs the latest version of Stockfish and uses lights to show the quality of your moves. You will be able to play on Lichess and Chess.com. You will also be able to play Checkers. The pieces are smart, so this board knows which move you are moving. In this video, we put the MB Grandmaster against ChessUp to show how far chess boards have come over the years. Grandmaster is rated around 1500 ELO, so one shouldn’t expect it to do a whole lot better against Stockfish 17.
