Chessnut boards shouldn’t need any introduction. They are smart chessboards that can work with a wide variety of apps. They let you play against Maia, Lc0 and Stockfish. The Chessnut Air was the first smart board in the series. It has a compact design but boasts many fancy features, including automatic piece recognition. It also works with ChessBase, DGT Pi, and third part apps. The Chessnut Move is a bit larger and has self-moving pieces. Unlike previous chess robots, every piece is smart and moves independently. That enables this robot to set up positions a lot faster.
These chess boards work with the same set of engines but the Move has an offline mode, so it can work even without an app. The DGT Pi fits nicely with Chessnut boards. It is a Raspberry Pi chess computer that can run engines like Stockfish. The original software hasn’t been updated in years but developers have been improving Picochess, which brings later version of Stockfish and Leela. You will just have to find the right image on GitHub or here, put it on a microSD card and insert it into your DGT Pi. We recently updated to Picochess 4.2.1 but more features are added all the time. Thanks to this setup, you can use your Chessnut boards without a smartphone.
