In the future, robots will be used to perform tasks in planes, reducing the number of crew members needed to operate them. ALIAS, Aircrew Labor In-cockpit Automation System, uses robotic manipulators and machine vision to interact with aircraft controls. Such a system allows humans to focus on more important tasks.
Aurora has already demonstrated how such an automated flight system works by using ALIAS to fly 3 separate aircraft. The robotic system works as a second pilot and has a tablet based user interface and speech recognition in addition to machine vision.
