Meet the Giacometti Arm with Balloon Body: a robotic arm measuring 20 meters long, with 20 joints driven by pneumatic, thin artificial muscles. Unlike other robots we have covered, this one has arm structures with helium-filled balloons to compensate for the weight. The robot weighs only 1.2 kg, so even if it falls, it won’t cause a whole lot of damage.
As demonstrated in this video, the robot also has an inspection camera on its head. It kind of reminds me of a few robotic snakes we have covered here in the past. Just like them, it can be used for search and inspection missions. Suzumori Endo Lab in Tokyo Institute of Technology is responsible for this.
