Nikola Tesla was one of the most enigmatic scientists of his time with a bunch of fascinating inventions. We have seen various Tesla coils in the past. Tesla’s egg of Columbus is also fascinating. The goal was to demonstrate a magnetic field by getting a a copper egg to stand upright when spun. It was first demonstrated in 1893. You can’t have the original version but many recreations of it are sold online these days. We recently got our hands on two of them as you can see in this video:
The larger model looks closer to the original model. It has a knob that lets you change its speed. You can flip it open to see the rotating mechanism inside. This one has a wooden construction. The other one is more compact but works the same way. It can be used with a power bank, so it is more portable. Both of these not only work with a PhiTOP (egg) but also a flip-top spinning toys. These are fun desk toys but also come handy for teaching young students physics concepts.
