There are multiple ways to achieve levitation, even when you are using magnets. You can do it with regular magnets, a diamagnetic setup or an electromagnetic base. As it turns out, there are already a bunch of Back to the Future Hoverboard toys that use all these approaches. We happen to have collected 5 of them over the years. These 3 use diamagnetism, electromagnetism, and magnetic repulsion to defy gravity.
The first hoverboard in the video is diamagnetic. Diamagnetism is a property where certain materials like pyrolytic graphite repel magnetic fields. This is the weakest field, so you can’t levitate heavy items this way. The KidsLogic Back to the Future II Levitating Hoverboard has the most repulsion power due to its electromagnetic base.
