Single Leg Robot That Balances & Flips

Robots doing forward and backward flips is nothing new. We have already covered humanoid robots and robot dogs that are capable of doing that. This one has a single leg. It can hop, balance, and flip. It has 3 degrees of freedom. According to the researchers, the actuator, motor driver, and communication interface were custom designed.

This robot weighs about 27.5lb. It uses a reinforcement learning-based controller. Its knee actuator was made using a high-torque gearbox. The policy for it was trained via reinforcement learning in simulation. As the above video shows, this robot can hop forward and backward on a treadmill. It can step over 8.5cm obstacles. It can also recover from external pushes.
