Meet SPARC from University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University researchers: a soft origami robot that can climb vertical walls or crawl on the ground. “Soft, Proprioceptive, Agile Robot for 3D Climbing” uses 3 pneumatic actuators and has twisted accordion like structures that fold under vacuum pressure. It uses silicone suction cups to climb vertical surfaces.

Soft origami robot inch-worms its way up walls

As the researchers explain in the above video, the robot’s Kresling origami structure allows for precise and predictable movements. The robot can carry 500g of load, which is twice its weight. It can also accurately track a line on the ground.
