Here is a robot landing gear that enables helicopters to land and takeoff almost anywhere. MAR consists of four articulated, jointed automated legs that bend and fold up while in flight. Each leg has a contact sensor in its foot to determine the appropriate angle to take to ensure the helicopter stays stable on the landing area.

DARPA’s MAR Robotic Landing Gear gives helicopters the ability to land on and take off from irregular and moving surfaces. It is being developed by the Georgia Institute of Technology at this point.
