Chess computers have come a long way over the years. The latest models let you play against Stockfish and other engines that have an estimated rating of over 3000 ELO. The DGT Centaur and ChessUp 2 are two of the most popular models on the market. The DGT Centaur was launched a few years ago. It has an E-ink display and lets you play against an adaptive engine with an estimated rating of 3000 ELO. The ChessUp 2 has more connectivity options. It lets you play on Lichess and Chess.com. It also supports Checkers.
DGT Centaur is larger with slightly bigger pieces. Both these boards use lights to show the moves but the ChessUp 2 is significantly better in this area as it uses different light colors to indicate the quality of your moves. While it lets you play offline, it does have the option to connect to the internet to let you play against online opponents. It also has a bar that shows how well the game is going. Both boards have smart piece recognition and don’t require a hard press like other models.
ChessUp 2 shows you all the valid moves and their quality, which is great for people who are just learning chess. It has also more levels for you to choose from. Centaur has friendly, challenging and expert modes for you to choose from. It runs an older version of Stockfish while ChessUp 2 runs Stockfish 17 at the time of this writing.
