Project Ace is Sony’s AI research project that aims to compete and beat elite table tennis players under official rules. It uses a perception system that measures ball spin in real-time. It uses a RL architecture that is trained in simulation. Researchers used a custom robotic arm for high speed play.

As the researchers explain, they pulled it off with event-based vision sensors. Ace can return high-speed, high spin shots like a pro. This robot was tested against 5 elite players. Ace managed to win 3 of the matches. The above video shows how Sony’s team pulled it off.
