SJCAM cameras need no introduction to those of you who have shopped around for high-quality, affordable action cams. We have covered a few of them in the past. The SJCAM SJ6 Ultra is another 4K@30fps action cam that doesn’t break the bank. It has dual screens, app connectivity, voice control, and external microphone support. SJCAM sent us a unit for testing. Let’s see what was included:

Like other SJCAM cameras we have covered, this one shipped with lots of accessories. For starters, we got a compact dual-screen camera that fit in the palm of our hand. It was inside a waterproof case that is rated to 30 meters. In the box, there were a bunch of stickers, adapters, and mounts. There was also a convenient protective cover for the lens, so you don’t have to worry about damaging the camera by accident.

We found this camera to be smaller than the SJ30 but quite sturdy. It has 3 buttons that give you easy control over its features. The bottom side button gives you quick access to settings. You can hold the top button for 2 seconds to switch from the back to the front screen. The front and back screens measure 1.3 and 2 inches, respectively. What we found neat about this camera is the fact that its rechargeable battery is replaceable.

This camera has the following resolutions:

  • Video: 4K @ 30fps, 2K @ 60fps, 1080/720p @ 120fps
  • Photo: 20/16/8/2MP

We were very impressed with the SJ30’s horizon lock feature. This one also has 6-axis gyro stabilization with 45-degree horizon correction, which is great for shooting silky-smooth videos on uneven ground. Like the other models we have tested, this one allows for lossless vertical shooting.

If you have used SJCAM cameras in the past, you will know how to use this one without even reading the manual. For example, once you turn it on, you can swipe left or right to change mode. You can also swipe up to quickly change mode and swipe down to access Voice, WiFi, brightness, and other settings. The SJ6 Ultra has a light on the right side that changes color as you switch from photo to video mode.

You can change resolution, shutter speed, timer, exposure, white balance, video encoding, pre-recording, voice control, image rotation, and other settings on the camera. From the Settings section, you can easily connect an M4 wireless microphone, which was included with our package. This tiny microphone shipped with 2 windshields. While it is not as capable as our DJI Mic Mini, it improves audio quality significantly. It doesn’t require a separate receiver to use, which is convenient. You can change many of these settings through the app. You will just need the SJCAM X app to get started. Once we turned on the camera, enabled Bluetooth, and opened the app, we were able to connect quickly. The app shows you what the camera sees and lets you change video/photo settings.

This camera also supports voice commands. For example, you can tell it to “Take Photo” or “Video Start” without having to touch the app or either screen. Multiple languages are supported. The pickup range seems to be pretty decent, so even if you are using a selfie stick, the camera will be able to understand your commands. If you connect this camera to your computer with a USB-C cable, you can use it for livestreaming through OBS. In addition to the M4 microphone, our package included a telescoping selfie stick. You can mount the camera directly to the selfie stick or use the frame mount. The bottom part slides open to give you access to the battery compartment. You can insert your microSD card from the left side.

We tested this camera during our runs and on an elliptical machine to see how it performs with its stabilization and horizon lock feature. While it is quite decent with regular stabilization, it handles uneven terrain and turns a lot better with the horizon lock feature turned on. The included case is airtight, so you don’t have to worry about exposure to rain and other elements when you use this camera in inclement weather.

Overall, we found the SJCAM SJ6 Ultra to be a very capable 4K action cam. The wireless mic support is a big plus. We also loved the fact that the battery is replaceable. A bunch of useful accessories and mounts are included in the box, so we had everything we needed to test the camera. Whether you are looking for an additional action cam to record your adventures from multiple points of view or just want to upgrade to 4K without breaking the bank, you should give this camera a look.
