Self driving cars are getting smarter all the time. They can still miss pedestrians in rare cases. By adding robotic eyes to these cars, it is possible to reduce unsafe crossings. These eyes use dual motors for more realistic movement. Once a car locks onto a target, the eyes track them to let pedestrians know the internal status of the vehicle.

If the car is not paying attention pedestrians, they can notice and cross in a safe fashion. The above video shows how this approach works.
